GENEALOGY RESEARCH REQUEST POLICY

Library staff and volunteers are available to assist you in your genealogy and local history research. 

The Historical Room non-circulating collection includes microfilmed copies of the Tecumseh Herald dating back to 1850, tax assessment rolls, city directories, club and local business records, high school yearbooks, public school documents and pamphlet file resources.

Historical Room volunteers have indexed births, marriages and deaths from the Tecumseh Herald for the years 1850 to 1920.

Researchers and genealogists who wish to do their own research are welcome to use the Historical Room during normal library operating hours.  A microfilm reader/printer and photocopier are available, and prints cost 15 cents per page.

Tecumseh District Library hours are:

Monday – Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (October through April)

Recognizing that many genealogists and local history researchers live outside the Tecumseh District Library service area, library staff and volunteers will correspond to out-of-town requests for a fee.

OBITUARY REQUESTS

All obituary requests must be prepaid. 

The following fees will apply for each obituary requested:
Photocopy from a year covered by library's index..............................…….$5.00
(Approximate year must be included with request)
Photocopy if EXACT date is known but is not indexed...............................$5.00
If the month and year of death is known but not the day, we can search through one month of microfilm for a charge…………………………………………...$8.00

Fees include postage, photocopying and handling.

If you do not have an exact date for the years not covered by our indexes, library staff will NOT be able to search for you because this would involve going through a whole year of newspapers week by week.

Tecumseh District Library cannot guarantee that an obituary/death notice will be located.

Please allow at least three weeks for staff to respond to your request.

LOCAL HISTORY RESEARCH REQUESTS

Library staff and volunteers will research your local history topics for a fee of $15.  Please include in your correspondence the name of the event or person and the date and location of the event if known.  Each individual request is $15.  

All local history requests must be prepaid. 

Fees include postage, photocopying and handling.

Tecumseh District Library cannot guarantee that your topic will covered in the Historical Room collection.

Please allow at least three weeks for staff to respond to your request.
